QAFCO awards plants project deal to Qcon.

Qatar Fertilizer Company (QAFCO) has awarded a $60 million contract to construct a melamine plant and a urea plant revamp project to Qatar Engineering & Construction Company (Qcon).
The scope of the work that is to be executed at Mesaieed by Qcon includes construction of the new Melamine Plant and revamping of the existing Urea-1 plant and covers Civil engineering, Mechanical, Electrical and Instrumentation installation activities of the QAFCO site.
Construction will start in the fourth quarter of this year and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2009.
The agreement was singed for QAFCO by its Managing Director, HE Khalifa Al-Sowaidi and for Qcon by its General Manager, Mr Mazen Abu Naba’a.
Qcon is the first Qatari firm to be awarded a construction contract of this magnitude within Qatar’s flourishing oil and gas industry.
After the agreement signing, HE Al-Sowaidi said “Qcon is the first Qatari company in history to undertake a major construction project for a chemical plant of this scale”.
